Decision Time on Soybeans is Here

Jul 23, 2018

We are entering a key time to make one of the final decisions that can increase your soybean yields.

We have many fields at or nearing the R3 growth stage and this is when we typically get the biggest yield response to foliar treatments.  We are hoping to keep an extra flower or two from aborting or trying to get more 4-bean pods instead of 3-bean.

Foliar fungicides have been around for a few years now and we have quite a bit of local replicated data showing the types of yield responses we have received.  Key timing will generally be before August 5-10 depending on maturity and planting date.

Foliar feed micronutrients also have been showing decent results in yield.  You can’t get large amounts of fertility into a plant via foliar uptake but timed correctly it doesn’t take much of certain nutrients to boost yields. Key timing will generally be a longer window than fungicides likely benefitting the crop from now until shortly before maturity as the plants are needing nutrients for grain production for a long time yet.

Fungicide

Costs

  • Priaxor (after rebate) $15.90
  • Adjuvants $1.75
  • Aerial application $10.00
    • Total cost $27.65
    • **cost to add if plane already needed for aphids $17.65

Economics

  • $8/bu beans * 3.4 bu gain = $27.20
  • $10/bu beans * 3.4 bu gain = $34.00
*These numbers come from our CFE Innovate replicated trial testing.

Foliar Feed

Costs

  • Max In Beans  $5.85
  • Adjuvants  $1.75
  • Aerial application $10.00
    • Total cost   $17.60
    • **cost to add if plane already needed for aphids $7.60

Economics

  • $8/bu beans * 2.1 bu = $16.80
  • $10/bu beans * 2.1 bu = $21.00
*These numbers come from our CFE Innovate replicated trial testing.
