Understanding Key USDA Grain Reports

Crop Progress:

Released at 3:00 pm on the first business day of each week from April 1st to November 30th. Included in the report: Planting, Harvesting Progress, and overall condition of the crops. Participants in this survey are made up of extension agents and Farm Service Agency Staff who report progress and conditions of selected crops in their area for the current week. Nearly every county in every state has at least one reporter.


USDA Prospective Plantings and Acreage Reports:

Released at 11:00 am on the last business day of March (prospective plantings) and on the last day of June (acreage).

The prospective plantings report provides a survey based estimate of U.S. farmers’ planting intentions and are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March.

The Acreage report provides a survey based estimates of U.S. farmers’ actual plantings and are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of June.


USDA Grain Stocks Report:

Released 4 times per year at 11:00 am on the last business day of March, June, September, and with the Crop Production/WASDE report in January.

This report contains stocks by States and U.S and by position (on-farm or off-farm storage); includes number and capacity of off-farm storage facilities and capacity of on-farm facilities.


USDA Crop Production and WASDE Reports:

Released monthly – 9th through 12th Calendar Day at 11:00 am.

Report contains crop production data for the US (Crop Production) and for the world (WASDE), including acreage, area harvested, yield, etc.

Balance sheet approach that breaks out elements of supply and demand.

Price Change (Corn Futures) have been about 20% greater on Crop Production/WASDE report days compared to all other trading days the past 3.5 years.
