CFE brings agriculture to life for local students.
Last fall, third graders at Central Lyon got a fun and educational look into the world of agriculture thanks to CFE Swine Specialist Amanda Eben. Amanda visited Tana Meyer’s classroom to lead a lesson she created called “Eat like a Pig.”
The catchy title caught the students’ attention right away, engaging all students, and not just those interested in agriculture. Amanda compared the nutritional requirements of pigs and humans, showing how both rely on balanced diets to stay healthy and grow. Students learned about pigs’ many uses beyond food and then got to “mix” their own feed rations using snacks like crackers, peanuts and candies. The interactive activity prompted plenty of laughter and several curious questions about pigs, farming, CFE and Amanda’s role with the cooperative.
The visit came about after Tana, a teacher who does an exceptional job weaving agriculture into her classroom throughout the year, invited Amanda to talk to her students. Tana and her husband, Sid, are also valued customers of CFE and strong advocates for connecting youth with agriculture.
Agriculture touches every part of daily life, yet many people have limited exposure to how food and fiber are produced. CFE considers this an opportunity to step in and help bridge the gap. Experiences like Amanda’s “Eat Like a Pig” lesson inspire curiosity and understanding among the next generation. When youth gain an early appreciation for agriculture, we’re investing in the future of our communities and our cooperative.
